Loyi new queen of the table
Loyi Yeung with Nicky Downs
Loyi Yeung with Nicky Downs

Loyi Leung, from the South Wonston club, is the new ladies' champion.

She beat Nicky Downs in three straight sets to become one of the youngest winners of this title. Nicky had won the event two seasons ago and with current holder Sue Purton unable to take part due to an injury, she was one of the favourites. In the event, she was no match for the ability of her fleet-footed opponent and was kept under tremendous pressure from the constant stream of winners that Miss Leung produced.

The mixed doubles was a cracking match between Brian Rayment and Sue Purton, and David Binns and Loyi Leung. Rayment and Purton took the first set 14-12, only to see their opponents take the next two, 13-11, 11-4. They stayed in the game with an 11-9 fourth set win and then clinched the title by winning the fifth 11-8. The ladies' doubles final had to be held over until the following Friday.

In League Division Two, both Tigers and Wolves recorded 9-1 victories, so everything now rests on these two sides when they play each other twice in the next two weeks. In addition, Wolves have a third match to play, against Test Valley A, the result of which could also have a bearing on the final placings. Division One had no such close finishes, the outcome having been decided weeks ago.

The remaining games are simply a question of personal pride and with both matches featuring Figheldean, it was Lionel Coles in the news again as he completed the double over Winterslow's Malcolm Cummins.

This time it was a five set victory and finished, 9-11, 11-6, 11-7, 8-11, 11-7. Coles is on top form at present but almost came unstuck against Josh White of the Underdogs. White was two sets to nil up and must have fancied his chances, but Coles recovered his composure to take the remaining sets 11-8, 11-6, 11-6. Despite losing this game, he beat Brian Rayment and Paul Coles, to produce his best performance of the season.
