Legion skydiver raises £700
A FORMER Royal Navy steward from Stanmore tackled his first skydive to raise money for the Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal.
Derek Green raised £700 after jumping from 12,000 feet last Saturday (June 29) at Netheravon Airfield in Wiltshire.
Attached to an instructor, he fell for 45 seconds before the parachute opened right on cue for a textbook landing.
Mr Green said: "It was absolutely fantastic and I really enjoyed it. It really was exciting and now I'd quite like to do another one.
"The Royal British Legion will be organising another jump next year, so I might go again."
For the last eight years, Mr Green has chaired the legion's Winchester branch and organised its Poppy Appeal.
In 2007, £38,000 was collected in Winchester compared with a target of £31,000. He added that if they raised £40,000 this year then it would make a total of £250,000 since he became chairman.
To play his part, Mr Green, 51, tackled the skydive.
He said: "My wife and I both spotted it in a Royal British Legion magazine, and she said I ought to volunteer for it."
Two other legion members also tackled the tandem skydive with Mr Green. They were Sid Hunt from Eastleigh and Mark Banning from Crondall, who were also attached to instructors.
Mr Green is still collecting donations for his skydive, and can be contacted on 01962 620006.
