Pupils hold carrot day
YOUNGSTERS at Oliver's Battery Primary School took a step closer to seeing in the dark last week(June 18) as they had a carrot day'.
Pupils munched through the orange vegetables at lunchtime thanks to a special menu whipped up by the catering staff and some pupils were given seeds so that they could grow the vegetables.
Gemma Gundry, who teaches years three and four, said: "They showed great enthusiasm for the seeds and they were excited about making a small step to becoming sustainable.
"This will be a lovely opportunity for them to watch the seeds grow into plants with a little TLC from them and hopefully enjoy some home grown, tasty vegetables!"
Even the dinner ladies adorned carrot hats for the occasion, which was thought up by Hampshire County Council's Catering Service.
The day was to show how carrots were an important vegetable to eat in the five-a-day scheme and to continue to raise awareness of healthy eating.
The catering staff at Oliver's Battery Primary School were also celebrating the award given to the school, for the district's highest increase in meal uptake between April 1, 2007 and March 28, 2008. The children have enjoyed tucking into the healthy options that are provided and this is evident in the 13.2 per cent increase in meal uptake.
