Protests against lorry noise

PROTESTORS gathered in Marchwood this morning to campaign against noisy lorries driving past their homes at night.

Dozens of residents from roads surrounding the village industrial park met on Normandy Way to make their voices heard.

They say the stream of HGVs driving to and from the site gives them sleepless nights and have called for councillors to press for action.

Brandishing placards they staged an hour-long peaceful protest outside the industrial park and afterwards vowed to continue their battle.

Raymond Bull, who lives on nearby Old Magazine Close, started the campaign with a one-man protest outside the park earlier this month.

He said: "This is the first protest, but there will be more.

"Our main message is to stop the 24/7 lorry traffic coming past our houses at night.

"I have knocked on a lot of doors looking for support and everybody is eager to see it stopped.

"People can't sleep at night."

Bosses at Oceanic Estates, which manages Marchwood Industrial Park, say companies have a right to drive in and out of the site at night but have offered to listen to "sensible" suggestions.

Two police officers were on the scene this morning and said the protest had passed off peacefully.

I live on the A36 to Salisbury. What a nightmare. The only road to Bristol and it is also24/7. Something should be done about these container lorries and juggernauts driving at night.

Then move, you silly sod! Did you not see the road when you moved there?

What would you rather? Them clogging up the roads during rush hour even more?

Lets be fair to the locals, the amount of transport companies that now base trucks there were not there when they bought their homes.

southampton council have played a 'blinder' by building on all the lorry parks in Southampton thus forcing the trucks over the Marchwood.

SCC benefits from the docks but does not have to accomadate the haulage companies.

i have friends that now drive 12 mile each way from Westend to Marchwood at 4am to start work? now two more large fleets (parcel force & Veolia) are based there the situation will worsen. Parcel force run most of its trucks at night.

Maybe if Mr Bull stopped knocking on peoples doors in the middle of the night he might get more support

These lorry companies were not about when I moved there donkeys years ago. And why should I move from my home, friends and family. Please don't show your ignorance.

tell you what, lets take the lorries away from towns, off the roads at night, away from residential areas, off the motorways...then lets see how long you all last for with no food in the shops, no fuel in garages and no parcels etc...go on, complain away...pick on the council that create the mess not the truckers who have a living to earn and have the right to do just that..

Carol. You must be old and baffled? If you have only years left on this planet try enjoying them. Move closer to your friends and away from the noise. We also wouldnt have to hear from NIMBYS on here!

Most of the houses came after the industrial estate and it bought jobs to the community and the surrounding area.

If you don't like it move to the middle of no where, talk about wanting their cake and eat it.

Marchwood is an industrial estate the prices of the surrounding houses reflect the proximity to the estate (lower) this estate is noted in the new forest plan as an idustrial estate. I am sure if it was to be turned into flats neighbours would complain . People are out of control always telling others what to do, next you will be telling me what colour to oaint my bedroom. If they are so worried why not club together and buy the estate . It is very important to the area for employment.Mr Bull should sell up and move to a quieter location but maybe he cannot afford to so he want to stiffle others.

you should think alittle before you write short ill judged comments.

we all need trucks, thats a fact. What we also need is planners placing transport hubs on motorway junctions like J2!

you would not want the trucks at marchwood if you lived there for ten years before this all started.

when you drive your truck with an empty box on the back you don't realize how noisey it is when its bouncing on the twistlocks. you move alng away from the noise while in the cab!

no on is saying we don't need the trucks, the protesters are saying there are better places for the transport yards. thats all!

So are you suggesting every company has its own hub on the sides of motorway. So how are you going to get the room for that then? Build on green belt, build you roads to the many many hubs needed, to service 100s of business. Intrude on people that live on this green belt. Not to mention the fact that the land owners might have something to say about your proposal to build on their property.

Totally impractical ill conceived idea, born out of no understanding of the industry or implications of your idea.

what you going on about? i guess you have a degree in transport? Hubs and transport yards near to motorway junctions work all over the country- look at Crick J18 m1.

of course you cannot do this everywhere but where practical like J2 m27 between the motorway and ower roundabout it would be a good idea.

the councils and government have purchase laws to gain the land, your missing the point that the majority (large estates) are suffering for a few landowners who could move to other parts of the county.

if the larger transport fleets were near junctions it would appease people. it would also suit the transport companies, loads of time is wasted getting from the motorway to marchwood. but Marchwood is only one example. also look at Calcroft ind est near West end.

this is practical and well concieved but sadly your desire to counter with no points would make me wonder if you a idio syncractic?

I,ve worked it out- do you work for VOSA?

You would appear ideal!

Hey what makes you an expert then? Do degree in transport? If so does that make you an expert on this, no just a person like me with an opinion.

The fact is This place would have to be massive and house more that 110s gigantic warehouses to suite each companies needs. Lorries. If your idea is so great and practical it would of been done already.

I say again, J18 M1. go and have a look if you can find the M1!

Sadly your opinion is mis-informed! travel the UK and see whats going on.

Marchwood was always going to be unsuitable without major investment.

remember the original story??? Marchwood!

So why bother reading a story whose headline makes it quite clear the story is NIMBY-oriented? Seems a bit daft to me. Oh yeh, that's why
