Lego model of QM2 revealed

For six painstaking months it was a labour of love but now this amazing model - made up of 480,000 Lego bricks - of Southampton's Queen Mary 2 is ready to take pride of place in a new museum.

Claimed to be the largest Lego ship in the world, the model is almost 20 feet long and depicts QM2 in dry dock at the French shipyard where the Cunard flagship was constructed.

It was in Holland in January that work began on the meticulous model, with the final piece of Lego put in place last month.

Weighing in at more than 1,900 pounds, the model was made by the nimble fingers of Klaas Meijaard and René Hoffmeister, both Lego enthusiasts, for the new maritime museum in Hamburg, Germany.

The Lego version of Cunard's QM2, which took more than 1,200 hours to construct, is now on view at the museum, which is known for its huge collection of model ships.

Lego can trace its roots back to Denmark in the early part of the last century and the name was taken from the phrase "leg godt'' meaning "play well'' and later the company discovered it could also be loosely interpreted as "I put together'' or "I assemble'' in Latin.

QM2, the biggest passenger liner in the world, entered service in January 2004 and is at present undertaking her annual programme of Atlantic crossings to New York from Southampton.

If you don't like it, go read something else.

Well seeing as you only ever post on here to slag off the Echo, I imagine you are probably the person who made the first comment!

Would like to know how much the city contributed to the building of it!

It maybe registerd in this city but I don't think they own it

Pretty much the same as Southampton's spitfire.
Designed by a Northerner, born in Eastleigh and built all over the place.
