Police report a decrease in knife crimes
POLICE have hailed a
campaign aimed at
tackling knife crime
in Southampton a
success after figures
showed a slight drop
in the number of
attacks using blades.
Figures show that last year
the police dealt with 388 violent
knife incidents with
crimes including robbery,
wounding and attemptedmurder.
It is the first time knife
crime has been identified as a
category on its own.

Since April this year police
have dealt with 65 knife
crimes, a three per cent
drop when compared
with the figure
at this time
last year.
Police say it
shows that a
campaign aimed
at stamping out
the carrying and
use of knives is having
an effect. Launched
in conjunction with the Daily
Echo's Operation Sharp, the
campaign is aimed at educating
youngsters not to carry
blades. Metal-detecting wands
have been issued to schools as
part of the campaign.
Hampshire police Inspector
Alistair Nichols, said: "The
simple message is carrying
knives ruins lives.
"The figures demonstrate
that we do not have a significant
knife crime culture in
Hampshire and the Isle of
Wight.
"We're working hard to get
knives and other offensive
weapons off our streets, by
increasing awareness and
encouraging communities
to provide us
with information
about those who do
carry knives so we
can take appropriate
steps before
someone is seriously
injured."
The figures were
released as part of the
annual crime statistics. In
keeping with the national picture,
crime was down across
the board in Hampshire.
Violent crime was down
four per cent while fraud and
forgery offences dropped by a
staggering 33 per cent.
Vehicle crime, criminal damage,
sexual offences and robbery
also fell by more than ten
per cent.
Chairman of Hampshire
police authority - the body
which oversees the force -
Jacqui Rayment said: "We
have been monitoring the performance
closely and are
pleased but not complacent
that we are doing so well.
"We have invested in
Hampshire police force that
has resulted in more officers
being freed up to be out and
about on the streets."
Nationally police recorded
22,151 offences involving
knives last year, with more
than 7,000 in London alone.
The figures come as Home
Secretary Jacqui Smith published
a new package of police
reforms that includes a pledge
that police officers time will
be freed up from paperwork so
more bobbies can return to
the beat.

Yep. Same old story. Forget what's actually happening, just tell everyone we're doing well, and they'll believe us
This government and its various puppets (police et al) are not only not fit for purpose, they're downright reckless. Get rid of them

I can't agree with these findings. I've been stabbed through the heart repeatedly over the last 2 weeks.

[bold]Considering she is the member of New Labour she would say that won't she?
Is this because she has freed more officers police can't protect people in Southampton parks any more and are going to start texting people to stay away from the parks?
Regarding knife crime going down perhaps Cllr. Jacqui Rayment and others of her ilk should try to tell this to the parents of those kids who have been killed in our country. It is sickening that while youngsters are being killed in England on almost weekly basis, opportunist slippery and slimy New Labour politicians are only interested in spinning the stories for their political advantage.[/bold]

In the wake of the recent "Bishopstoke Chainsaw Massacre" / shaving accident, is the copper in the photo auditioning for the re-make of "Pyshco"?

Oh dear!
Captain Dollop has been over exerting himself yet again
Lets do some sums here to substantiate this [bold]amazing[/bold] data
"Since April this year police have dealt with 65 knife crimes, a three per cent drop ([bold]this is a drop of 1.95 cases that have been 'dealt' with as in 'not quite 2 cases'[/bold]) when compared with the figure at this time last year.
Police say it shows that a campaign aimed at stamping out the carrying and use of knives is having an effect. ([bold]less than 2 cases! "An effect!"[/bold] - Oh brother)
The figures demonstrate that we do not have a significant knife crime culture in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight ([italic][bold]excluding those from another plant and laboratory experiment created my insane professors - who hav you 'demonstrated' this too?[/bold][/italic])
Less than 2! Not prosecuted or jailed but 'dealt' with - Jokes
Lets look further - "Violent crime was down four per cent while fraud and forgery offences dropped by a staggering 33 per cent."
If you have 2 then 33% of this is just over a half but if you have 20 000 then 33% is 1504 - Do you see where this is going? So 33% of how many?
Violent crime down 4%! This is too stoopid to continue on.

Definite syrup.
Glasses? Should have gone to Specsavers.
Surely they could have dragged up a better example of Her Majesty's Constabulary to pose with the obligatory knife?
This guy looks like a civilian desk clerk anyway. I cant imagine him being in the front line of the riot squad crashing through the door of a St Marys crackhouse

What sort of example is this to children. Will nobody think of the children?
