Coastguard warning ahead of strike action
HAMPSHIRE'S coastguard has issued a warning to sailors and holidaymakers as more than 700 officers around the country prepare to walk out this weekend in protest over pay.
Coastguard services across the county will be hit in the two-day strike, and bosses are urging water users to be vigilant while it is in place.
Nearly all of 30 officers at Solent Coastguard, which covers all of the Solent area, will be participating in the strike.
The action was called by the Public and Commercial Services Union, and will start at 7pm on Friday.
MCA chief executive Peter Cardy said the strikes would cause disruptions to the coastguard service but said helicopters would continue to fly and RNLI lifeboats would still be in action.
He said: "This weekend HM Coastguard's normal service will be affected by industrial action.
"Plans are in place to provide cover, but I'm encouraging everybody working or playing on the sea or on the beach this weekend to take that bit of extra care and to follow our safety advice.
"The MCA is absolutely committed to maintaining the safety of life at sea, despite the ongoing industrial action, and, to aid seafarers, we have introduced electronic versions of the marine safety information broadcasts and NAVTEX on the front page of our website.
"We have drawn up detailed contingency plans for the weekend and, although our services will be more limited than usual, distress calls will be answered as normal.
"We are also asking sea users to not only watch out for themselves, but for others too as they would normally.
"The message is still the same - if you see something that you believe is dangerous or putting people's lives at risk, don't delay."
He added that if in trouble, people should use VHF Channel 16, or if near a shoreline, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Will anyone miss these strikers? I expect not - which then suggests they are surplus and should be disposed of.
Don't like the pay, earn another way!

I am so amazed at the previous comment by Fred. If you evergo to the beach you know that these people help make it safer for everyone, families, yachtsmen, ships. How can you even suggest that these dedicated people are surplus?? I suggest you find out more about the work they do & how it affects thousands of people daily before you dismiss them!

We seem to be heading into a "Summer of Discontent" and resurrecting the "Sick Man of Europe" role. People just dont get it. If dissatisfied with your job or pay then stop hurting the public and get another job. Retrain yourself. Improve your education to be more marketable to an employer. Take responsibility for yourself. No-one has a right to a job. Stop moaning. Give the public a break.

So safety will be OK. What were the strikers rostered to do then - diversity training? rescue in a Carbon neutral world courses?

Another day.... another strike.
They're going to become so common.. that going on strike will not achieve anything at all.

I am a shift worker, and I don't see what the relevance is. In Fords, shift workers do all the donkey work that the days wont do.

Fred you surprise me, surely you have read enough of Southy's wise counsel to know how the world works! He is the sites expert on all subjects. I must ask him sometime, why when stationed in Germany all those years, none of The West Germans seemed to grasp that just over the border was - the promised land, yet many of those contented types from the East wanted out, ungrateful lot.

East Germany made the Russians look like capitalists. As for families, do you not understand that there were as many on the West German side - still did not entice them to make the trip. You appear to read a lot and think you can comment - this of course depends on what you read. I think you are depriving a village of its idiot ! The Russians had a saying about their leaders, "I hear everything is good - I just can't see it "

russia closed germany off for a reason, that was to reducate them, some thing the west should of done too, then maybe we would of not see the right wing fascis building up again like what is happening now in the part they use to call west germany.one good thing about the russians they kept the allied agreement first when to pull out of germany and other countrys where has the rest took there time in pulling out
