Scouts' business sponsor plea
THE 12th Andover West Scouts need to raise more than £200,000 to replace their old scout hut - and are now appealing for business sponsorship.
The troop's existing building is a temporary structure that has served well for nearly 20 years but it is constructed from a number of portable cabin-type units fixed together.
The life span for this type of building is at best 10 years, so with great care and constant maintenance the troop has been able to preserve the building, until now.
Hut committee chairman Stewart O'Brien said: "Scouting is a registered charity and is now over 100 years old.
"We at the 12th cater for over 100 young people from all over Andover and the surrounding villages from the ages of seven to 25.
"We have a tremendous group of volunteer leaders and parents who are dedicated to the future of the group and the young people involved.
"These leaders along with various Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorer Scouts and parents have been vigorously fundraising to achieve our goal of constructing a new building."
So far they have raised more than £6,000 but with the final cost in the region of £200,000 fundraising efforts need to be stepped up.
Mr O'Brien added: "As soon as we can agree planning permission, we will be making applications to various funding organisations like the National Lottery, but what we really need is some local support from some of Andover's nationally recognised companies.
"If we can partner with some of our town's biggest employers I feel sure that we could reach our target and start the building procurement process a lot sooner."
