Second Quarley shooting school would be ‘unfair’

CONCERN over incre-ased noise is just one of the worries of residents and businesses opposing a proposed second shooting school in Quarley.

A field in the village has recently been acquired with the apparent intention of setting up clay pigeon shooting days, which are allowed for 28 days of the year without needing planning permission.

The field has a road and footpath alongside it with an already-established skeet for low-level shooting.

The proposed site is next to Lains Shooting School and owner Howard Kirby thinks it would be unfair for another shooting site to be set up with a lack of suitable facilities.

"We don't want to get drawn into any debate about another shooting school in Quarley as long as its existence doesn't result in people taking pot shots at me - and we've already started getting calls," he said.

"Lains Shooting School provides jobs for a number of local people and we jumped through hoops to comply with planning conditions to ensure its future after an individual complaint about noise.

"We now have specially manufactured low noise cartridges which all our customers have to use and we invested £40,000 in upgrading facilities to sink the shooting stands into the ground or to take other measures to reduce noise.

"It would be unfair if another shooting school was allowed to operate in the next field that had no such facilities at all.

"Complaints about no-ise and possibly parking would then cause local upset again and could make life difficult for my business, which has been operating for more than 20 years.

"Lains Shooting School has a great reputation and high standards.

"We would only expect the same demands to be made of any other operator that were made of us."
