A SURPRISE ride in a horse and carriage was the icing on the cake for Andover couple Charlie and Shirley Ford who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday.
The golden couple, from Mead Road, were married in St Mary's Church, Andover, on 2 August 1958 after two years of courtship.
They celebrated their anniversary with a party in the Hayward Suite at The Wolversdene Club which they travelled to in style in the carriage. "The celebration was like our wedding day all over again," said Shirley, aged 72.
Charlie, also aged 72, and Shirley met in an Andover café when they were 18. They got to know each other as friends but it wasn't until the group they were with began pairing off that they went on their first date.
It led to two years of writing to each other while Charlie did national service in Malaya. But when Charlie came home they got engaged.
"Shirley is the love of my life and I would be lost without her.
We are never apart," said Charlie.
At the anniversary party the couple were treated to songs performed by a friend, Unchained Melody and When You Tell Me That You Love Me.
Both these songs meant a great deal to Charlie and Shirley and helped make the celebration even more special.
"We've had a wonderful 50 years together and neither of us would change a thing," said Shirley. The couple have three children and two grand-daughters.
