BRILLIANT weather attracted the crowds for what organisers believe will prove to be another record St Mary Bourne and District Flower Show and Fete.
All profits will go to good causes in and around the village, although earlier this week the proceeds were still being counted.
New for this year was a fun dog show in the central arena and a troupe of Irish dancers to entertain the visitors.
Tortoise racing is a regular, if unusual, feature of the day and much fun was had in the more traditional cow pat bingo. The beer tent with fine ales provided by the Coronation Arms proved to be a popular attraction on a hot day.
Mr Mike Crofts, chairman of the St Mary Bourne Horticultural Society, said there were strong entries in all the classes of the flower show, which featured a hanging basket section this year.
St Thomas' Church in Charlton continued its year-long centenary celebrations with a special flower show this weekend.
Every month this year the church is organising an event to celebrate its construction in 1908. Events so far include a symbolic reconstruction of the church being built and a beating the bounds ceremony. In keeping with the theme, the flower show featured displays from periods throughout the 100 years. Colourful and decorative gardens were open to members of the public in Stockbridge over the weekend raising over £3,600 for the local church.
During the Saturday and Sunday afternoons 11 people opened their gates to allow 460 visitors to wander into their gardens.
Stockbridge Primary School was also open to show off its wildlife garden. There were bric-a-brac and plant stalls and a brass band performed on both days on the lawn of St Peter's Church. The weekend raised money for church funds through ticket and cream tea sales.
Organiser Tony Shep-pard said: "There was a wonderful atmosphere in Stockbridge over the weekend and everyone who visited was very complimentary about the gardens."

I live in the USA and would loved to have seen some photos of the flower festival in Charlton. My mom along with many other ladies spent hundreds of hours putting it together and I would have loved to have seen her hard work. They also raised a substantial amount of money. I know that some-one from the paper took photos.

Thanks, I had looked before but now I see them.
I love reading the Andover Advertiser on-line every Friday to just find out what is going on in a town where I lived for 20 years. It helps with the home sickness.
