DOZENS of red telephone boxes under threat of closure in Hampshire have been given a stay of execution following a decision by BT.

BT has agreed to investigate whether groups such as local councils or even local charities can take charge of the traditional style boxes, which are considered by many to be a part of the nation's heritage.

The company's chief executive Ian Livingston says that while the proposal is under consideration no more phone boxes will be axed.

Locally boxes in several rural communities, including Wherwell and Hurstbourne Tarrant, are on the hit list.

According to English Heritage only 12,747 of the red boxes are left.

Earlier thing month The Andover Advertiser featured many of the rural boxes under threat as BT has felt the pressure of bad publicity as scores of other local newspapers followed suit.
