| Winner: George Lloyd from The Oak Tree Nursery and Pre-school in Whitchurch won a national design competition run by Marie Curie Cancer Care. George won an art set and a cuddly toy and the nursery won £50 of W H Smith vouchers. |
A LOCAL youngster from Oak Tree Nursery and Pre-school in Whitchurch has won first prize in a national design competition.
George Lloyd, aged four, entered the Mini Pots of Care competition organised by Marie Curie Cancer Care through his nursery.
Youngsters at the nursery, and across the country were invited to plant their own daffodil bulb and care for it as it grew.
They also decorated a wrapper to place around the pot once it was blooming.
Sally Sansom, community fundraiser - Hampshire and Isle of Wight for Marie Curie Cancer Care, visited George's nursery to give him his prize of an art set and a cuddly toy dog.
Stacey Matthews, who co-ordinated the initiative at The Oak Tree, said: "All children have had great fun taking part in the Mini Pots of Care activities and have learnt a great deal.
"The planting of the bulbs helped the children to learn more about the natural world around them, while the involvement with the Marie Curie charity has taught them more about care and understanding of others."
Children at the school raised £232.17 through the initiative which will go to Marie Curie Cancer Care.
