Riding for disabled group closes
BROUGHTON'S Riding for the Disabled Group is being forced to close after 38 years because of operational issues.
The group, which was originally formed in 1970, has been very well supported and currently has eight adult and child riders, over 20 volunteers and five horses.
But group secretary Ann Heather explained: "All our volunteers are getting a bit older now and we have no new younger people coming forward to join us."
Rides for the disabled are continuing until 25 June.
"It's going to be the end of an era in Broughton because the group was really great fun to be involved with," added Mrs Heather.
"Everyone involved has had a very good time working with the Broughton group. It's extremely satisfying to see the progress the disabled children and adults make with the horses.
"It really will be quite a sad occasion especially on that last day."
The group is planning a get-together in the autumn so everyone involved can meet again surrounded by memorabilia from the group's history.
"We would like to express our gratitude to all those who have given donations of money, facilities and equipment," said Liz Ottley, group treasurer and one of the original volunteer helpers.
"Without their help the group could not have functioned so successfully."
